NBC announced main Olympic host Mike Tirico is leaving Beijing early to head home to host Superbowl Sunday coverage and will likely remain in the U.S.
Coverage of these games have been difficult to say the least with Chinese officials keeping a close eye on reporters and media outlets, carefully crafting the messaging that goes out from the games. Earlier in the winter games a Dutch reporter was seen on camera being carried away because local government officials were unhappy with something the reporter said or did.
So far ratings for the winter games have been lackluster to say the least. The network blames the pandemic, lack of crowd, and the fact that we don't have any big athletic stars on the Michael Phelps level for audiences gravitate to.
