Chrissy Metz Delivers Emotional Performance Of 'I'm Standing With You'

92nd Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals

One of the best parts of tuning in to the Academy Awards every year is watching the live performances of all the Best Original Song nominees. There's always a number of memorable performances at the Oscars, but this year may have been the most star-studded lineup yet. Superstar musicians Elton John, Idina Menzel, Cynthia Erivo, and Randy Newman were all announced as performers at the 2020 Oscars on Sunday (February 9). One surprising performer, however, truly blew viewers away. We're talking, of course, about Chrissy Metz.

Fans of NBC's This Is Us will recognize Metz as the actress behind Kate Pearson, but she's also an insanely talented singer. She showed off her musical chops at the Oscars while performing the song 'I'm Standing With You.' The emotional track was written by Dianne Warren for the movie Breakthrough. Metz's performance also made the case for why the song landed a Best Original Song nomination.

In a gorgeous blue gown, Metz delivered an emotional performance of 'I'm Standing With You' during the broadcast. Adding a personal touch to her big moment, Metz ended the song with a sweet shoutout to her mom. "I love you, Mom," she said. Capping off the lovely moment, the camera then cut to a tearful Warren in the audience.

Breakthrough is based on the book The Impossible, which is a retelling of a true story written by Joyce Smith and Ginger Kolbaba. In the movie, Metz stars as a woman named Joyce whose 14 year old son John falls through a frozen lake. John gets trapped under water for 15 minutes and it seems unlikely he'll survive after the terrible accident. Joyce, her husband, and their pastor pray for a miracle and - spoiler alert - a miracle does happen.
