Lil Nas X Serves Up A Steaming Hot 'Panini' At The 2019 MTV VMAs

Lil Nas X kept his summer takeover strong with a laser-filled performance at the 2019 MTV Video Music Awards, which took place on Monday night (August 26) at Newark, New Jersey's Prudential Center.

Introduced by Billie Ray Cryus, the superstar rapper, who held onto the top of Billboard’s Hot 100 for 19 weeks with "Old Town Road," brought something new to the VMA stage. After an introduction that mocked the continued remixes of his breakout single in the year 2079, the 20-year-old star donned a robot-like get-up for the flashy rendition of his new single, "Panini." In fact, it proved that he's just as versatile with singing and rapping as he is with choreography. And there wasn't a reason not to dance. In case you haven't heard, "Panini" was recently certified Platinum," despite the continued success of "Old Town Road."

Even though his foray into the industry has been speedy, "Old Town Road" helped the rapper earn eight nominations, making him the third most nominated act of the evening behind Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande and Billie Eilish. Los Angeles director Charles "Calmatic" Kidd II recently spoke to The Los Angeles Times about the accolades, admitting they've certainly changed his mindset on the ceremony. "Now I'm the person I was mad at last year," Calmatic, 31, told the outlet. "It’s interesting how quickly things can change. Last year was a humbling experience, but hopefully this year things will be different."

As for how Lil Nas X reacted to working with Calmatic, the star revealed that he initially didn't know what to expect from the clip. "He was very encouraging and knew exactly what he wanted and what his vision was," he recalled. "[When I first saw the video], I thought it was amazing and like a movie. I didn’t know what to expect, [but] it came out looking outstanding."
