New Music Report: Expert Picks - Week of August 14th

Avicii

There has been a lot of great new music released over the last few weeks. You can find out what was released this weekend in our New Music Report, but take a look at what we've been listening to lately. Our editors Nicole, James, and Isha have shared some of their Expert Picks for the week. Check it out below.

Nicole's Picks:

Avicii - "Lonely Tonight" featuring Rita Ora & "Without You" featuring Sandro Cavazza

First, let me start off by saying how THRILLED I am that Avicii has bestowed new music upon us. As someone who's followed his career from the very beginning, I was heartbroken when he announced he would no longer be touring. So you can imagine my heart doing backflips when I heard this EP was being released. And full disclosure: I love EVERY. SINGLE. SONG on here -- it's hard to pick a favorite, but since this is my expert pick, I'll give you two: "Lonely Tonight" featuring Rita Ora and "Without You" featuring Sandro Cavazza.

What I really love about these songs is that they remind me of some of his earlier stuff a little bit -- just with new life breathed into it. I also adore Rita Ora. Furthermore, when it comes to music, I'm very big on melodies, and the melodies in both of these songs got stuck in my head immediately -- even when he began teasing them on social media with the mountains of Peru as my visual (and a llama).

Anyway, thank you Tim for this new music, and I really hope you never ever stop making it. ❤️

Bebe Rexha - "Meant To Be"

The thing that I love most about Bebe Rexha is her ability to write such relatable songs. I can think back to so many times in my life where I was able to relate to her songs at one point or another. Case and point, as I was listening to All Your Fault Pt. 2,  I found myself agreeing with a lot of the things she was singing about -- the culmination being the last song on the album, and in my opinion, the perfect song to close Pt. 2 with. "Meant To Be" is as simple as is sounds. It's saying, let's take this journey together one day at a time, and if it's meant to be, it'll be. So simple, so true, I love it. Also, shoutout to Bebe for teaming up with Florida Georgia Line on this. She's been linking up with rappers and pop stars, but i'm loving the country influence here.

James' Picks:

Fifth Harmony - "Angel"

Two weeks before the release of their self-titled LP, Fifth Harmony dropped a new cut called "Angel," which hears the girl group trading in their sing-a-long pop sounds for something that skews more on the urban side. Produced by Skrillex and Poo Bear, "Angel" sounds as down and dirty as the lyrics to the mid-tempo cut appear to be. On the brooding track, Lauren Jauregui, Ally Brooke, Dinah Jane and Normani Kordei recall a not so serious relationship where they involved themselves in a romance that just wasn't good for them. "Should’ve never cross that line with ya/ Everything cool, just drinkin' with ya/ Way too young to be up in handcuffs/ Been tryna spend my life on the phone with ya," Lauren sings during the pre-hook.

Tritonal featuring Laurell - "Good Thing"

Tritonal is aiming for all those positive vibes, particularly with producer/DJs Chad Cisneros and David Reed collaborating with Laurell on "Good Thing." Over some lush production, which includes a simple acoustic guitar backing, the team-up hears Laurell offer positive lyrics. And, yes, even though it's a departure for the two and their progressive house and hard-hitting electro territories, the duo's airy number is a welcoming revamp for the pair. “Good Thing” is also a celebration of sorts as it marks the 300th release on Tritonal's label Enhanced Recordings.

Isha's Picks:

Trina – "Get Money"

Trina isn’t letting these jealous haters get to her. She’s too busy getting money. Just a few days ago, the Miami rapper went off on some women in her hometown city who were throwing shade at her on social media. At the end of the day, the MC knows that hating come with the territory and it means that she’s doing something right. Jealous people can never hold her back from securing the bag. She’s going to keep ignoring them and continue to win regardless. Peep the realness Trina is spitting on “Get Money” below.

Desiigner - "Arms"

In anticipation of his upcoming debut album, Life of Desiigner, the Brooklyn rapper released a brand new track called “Arms.” This new song was produced by 16YRSOLD. Throughout it, Desiigner has his usual smooth, yet hype-energy flow. If you’re a fan of Desiigner’s previous music, you’ll also love this one. He also doesn’t forget to shout out Kanye West, JAY-Z and Beyonce on it. "I got want you want, yeah/40 in my arms, yeah/ And they sound like bombs, yeah/ And they going dumb, yeah," the 20-year-old artist raps.
